 MATALA

Romantic Beach Weddings
Matala for beach weddings on Crete
Matala is the personal choice of ‘Romantic weddings on Crete’. Despite its small size Matala is full of life, uniting the people of different social backgrounds, interests and ages. Once you are there you will immediately notice the large caves cut into the cliff face. It is very possible that these artificial caves used to be houses in Roman times and were later used as burial chambers. Also, Matala was made very famous in the late 1960s with the introduction of the hippie movement across Europe at the time who also used to live in these caves. During the Minoan civilization Matala used to be the port for Phastos and during the Roman Empire it was the port of Gortyn. During the tourist season you can hear live music during the monthly festivals and every year from June to September there are beach volleyball contests, festivals celebrating Cretan culture and so on, so you will definitely have the feeling that you too are taking part in a ‘Big Greek Wedding’, with night time dancing and richly furnished tables.

KOMOS

Komos Chapel

A few miles before Matala you will discover Komos, don’t miss the panoramic view that is in front of you – on the very edge of the cliff above the long sandy beaches of Komos you will discover a small Orthodox chapel of St.Pantelimon – the ideal choice for your wedding ceremony. During the Minoan civilization Komos used to be one of the most important trade ports. After extensive archaeological digs it was discovered that Komos was a real Minoan city with paved streets and two storey houses. An ancient temple devoted to an unknown deity was also discovered which is supposed to have been an active site up to the time of the
                                                                        Roman Empire.

Komos at Sunset
You may choose to venture south to Komos, near to the famous Matala beach where the chapel’s remoteness surrounded as it is by long sandy beaches is the place for you, where peace and quiet followed by a quick dip will prepare you for your festive reception in Matala in the evening. What’s why we have selected it, to combine a chapel service with a reception at a beach tavern or even a religious wedding on Matala beach and then walking a few steps to celebrate the night in a local beach taverna. Of course, then the choice of a fire work display on the beach may be an option that you wish to use as a backdrop to the sea, moon, stars and
                                                                                    raki.

 PITSIDIA

Pitsidia Villas
They say that the most romantic sunset is at Komos and the most beautiful moon can be viewed from a villa in Pitsidia. The village is situated next to the famous beaches of Komos and Matala. Local Cretan food which is renowned for its traditional recipes and flavours (which are extremely tasty) or a festive evening at a private villa with a pool and fireworks in your honour - is your decision to make!

PHAESTOS

Phaestos archaeological site
Phaestos used to be the biggest and most fertile Cretan fertile plain situated on the Messaras Plain on a hill used to control the entire region and was the location of the Ancient Minoan palace of Phaestos, second only to Knossos. Phaestos city slowly faded away in 200 BC after being attacked by neighboring town of Gortyn. If you like archaeological digs and panoramic views of olive trees and endless rippling mountains then let’s organize your ceremony here. Besides that, Phaestos is a good location as it is close to Matala, Komos, Zaros and Gortyn.

ZAROS

Forty six kilometers from Heraklion is the lovely village of Zaros located on the southern side of Psilorite, rich in flora and fauna and its own lake! The lake is actually artificial, although you would hardly know it! Next to the village is the famous Zaros water bottling plant. If you want to see the traditional Cretan lifestyle then we can highly recommend this   small village to you! The narrow streets and the local inhabitants can be found in traditional Cretan black dress living between the natural water springs. If peace and quiet attracts you then welcome to Zaros, you will have a sense of timelessness from the surrounding mountains and a real sense of peace. From here you can visit the forest of Rouvas and the famous monastery of St.Vrontisiski founded in the fourteenth century during the second Byzantine period.

 KISSIMOS

If you are looking for an isolated place which not everyone can reach, then the ideal place for your wedding ceremony will be Kissamos, located on the north western side of Crete and directly west of Chania. It’s picturesque sandy beaches, endless olive bushes, orange trees and village makes this region one of the most remarkable of Crete.
Kissamos has a lovely small chapel which often finds itself splashed by the sea. It is a lovely place to hold a small civil service outside the chapel as well as finding a nearby taverna to wash down the Cretan wedding feast. Sometimes as a wedding planner, there are just too many choices! Did I mention Matala?
