Below are the various locations where it may be possible to accommodate different types of civil ceremony, religious wedding, anniversaries, vow renewals as well as engagments.
Matala |
Beach Locations: Plakias and Preveli in the Rethimnon province both
offer secluded beach resorts which are easily accessable by car and can provide
ideal places for beach weddings away from the more populated northern Cretan
coast. Kissimos has a lovely small chapel which
often finds itself splashed by the sea.
Komos |
Komos is a lovely place to hold a small
civil service outside the chapel as well as finding a nearby taverna to wash
down the Cretan wedding feast. Sometimes as a wedding planner, there are just too many choices! Did I mention Matala? Or, and of course there is Elafonisi!
Elafonissi |
Komos chapel |
Chapels: You may choose to venture south to Komos,
near to the famous Matala beach where the chapel’s remoteness surrounded as it
is by long sandy beaches is the place for you, where peace and quiet followed
by a quick dip will prepare you for your festive reception in Matala in the
evening.
Chapel outside Kissimos |
That’s why we have selected it, to combine a chapel service with a
reception at a beach tavern or even a religious beach wedding on Matala beach
and then walking a few steps to celebrate the night in a local beach taverna.
Of course, then the choice of a fire work display on the beach may be an option
that you wish to use as a backdrop to the sea, moon, stars and raki.
Anglican Chapel of Chania |
There are plenty of chapels to choose from, if you
would like to stay close to Heraklio city, for example, we can arrange for a
civil ceremony outside the small chapel of Agia Pelagia, which gives you the
impression of being in a village. The choice is yours!
Zaros Lake |
Lake
weddings: Whether it
is the fantastic lake in Zaros or Kournas, these are the two natural lakes on
Crete and both are ideal for a wedding ceremony followed by an evening in the nearby
lakeside tavernas.
Kournas Lake |
You may even choose to go swimming! But if you do, you will
have to watch out for the geese as both places, especially Kournas see a fair
share of migration during the spring and can both provide ornithologists with a
rare sighting every now and then.
Agios Nicholas/St.Nicholas |
City
breaks: There are four towns on Crete. Chania, Rethimnon, Heraklion and Agios Nicholas. All are very beautiful.
Chania |
So, if you like
walking around old city lanes and reliving the history of a very
imaginative town then why not have a chapel or church wedding there followed by
a night in a nearby taverna!
Phaestos |
Archaeological
sites: If you like the idea of reliving Ancient Greece by
having the civil and/or religious ceremony at or near to an archaeological site
such as Phastos, then we can arrange it for you. It would definitely be a more
unusual backdrop to the normal wedding.
Aptera |
Historic
Castle: if your mind prefers the medieval period, then it is
possible to celebrate your civil ceremony in Aptera, an old Venetian castle
overlooking the Suda port of Chania. The view is remarkable and would provide
an ideal setting for your vows. There is also the added bonus of being close to
Georgetown (Giorgolopoli), a very beautiful and much under-rated holiday resort
between Chania and Rethimnon. In fact, I can picture a civil ceremony in
Aptera, a restorative swim and religious ceremony in Kournas lake followed by a
lakeside taverna to hold your reception before driving back to Giorgolopoli.
The possibilities that we have on offer are endless!
Anglican Church of Chania |
Anglican Weddings: Chania city is the primary location of the
Anglican Church on Crete, although the priest is happy to travel to you. So,
choose your most romantic setting for a private ceremony, from your hotel,
villa or chapel and we can set it up!
Roman catholic Church of Rethimnon |
Roman Catholic Weddings: Heraklion and Rethimnon City are the primary
areas for the Roman Catholic church on Crete, and again the priest is happy to
travel to you to perform your marriage in a quiet romantic setting.
St.Titus Orthodox Church of Heraklion |
Orthodox weddings: Well, if you are Orthodox, the Crete is your
oyster, or island! You have the freedom to be married in any Orthodox Church of
your choice. So, the biggest problem the two of you will have is argueing over
which location is the most beautiful!
Georgolopolis |
Engagment, Anniversary & Vow Renewals: If you wish to propose to the love of your life
and require somewhere romantic to pop the not so unexpected question why not on
thew beach at Bali or the beach at Matala, or beside a lake, a castle, or at a
place of your choosing!
Elounda |
If you would like to surprise your wife perhaps, it's good to say your sorry through a surprise, like
celebrating your anniversary with a surprise reception! It does work! Or
perhaps you would both like to reaffirm your vows to remember in front of
friends and family who were not present the first time.
Or perhaps, you would like to go to Pitsidia, where you can take
your civil vows outside Komos chapel, followed by a reception in a Matala taverna, and or
a religious marriage on the beach followed by a honeymoon vacation close by
allowing a perfect driving vacation around Mires province or further afield
while having the feeling that you are visiting Crete twenty years ago.
Kissamos |
A holiday in the sun where sometimes just walking/driving to the
beach is too much effort. The same could also be said of Zaros village and
plenty others too! Tell us what you would like and we will create a tailor-made
wedding holiday for you.
Elounda |
Hotel weddings: it is possible in some hotels around the island to hold the weding
inside the hotel facilities, we will be happy to offer suggestions. There are two extremely nice places on the north of Crete, Elounda and Bali.
Bali |
My personal favourite, Bali, between Rethimnon and Heraklio, snuggled between the two cities it combiines reasonable hotels in a good location with romantic beach settings and starlit night!
'My Matala'
Matala was made famous in the Joni Mitchell song
‘Carey’. Archaeologist’s think Matala was a port for the Minoans at Phastos.
The free spirit of the 1960s still pervades the area, with low key buildings
behind the beach and a swath of tavernas, cafes and bars competing for custom
in a very laid back atmosphere. In fact, if you walk through the deadly tourist
traps of souvenir shops etc... You would hardly know you were in a tourist
resort.
The local council has done its best not to inhibit the loose, free spirit
vibe which made the area famous. You almost feel that if you stay long enough
either your fellow guests or hosts will think you too have fallen in love with
the place and you want to join your fellows and become part of the local
furniture.
In fact, if you want a location on Crete where being half asleep is
considered a positive asset and trying to decide where to eat in the small
local community is the toughest decision of the day you couldn’t pick a better
place. If you feel like being sporty, there is beach volleyball and if you want
to travel around Crete with Matala as your base, it is ideally situated near to
Mires and is about an hour by car from Heraklion International Airport. In fact
it is Margarita’ second home.
If you choose to, you could have a civil ceremony at
the local council offices and then have a religious ceremony outside one of the
many small chapels dotted about the area or on the beach at dusk surrounded by
torch light near to a local tavern and we can arrange for you to celebrate your
nuptials with either a rock band or traditional Cretan musicians to dance away
the night! It is even possible in the area around Matala to celebrate
everything in your own private villa where you can hold your own private
reception.
You may notice a large text here, that’s because Margarita loves this place and won’t apologize for finding their Cretan
dream there!
